Who runs this camp, anyway?

Camp Quest Kansas City is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 2011.

The camp is governed by a Board of Directors and operated by a staff of volunteer Leaders.  We are a licensed affiliate of Camp Quest, Inc., a national organization supporting Camp Quests throughout the United States and three in other countries.

All Camp Quests share a common purpose and mission, and all are operated as nonprofit organizations.

Visit Camp Quest’s national website here.

Is Camp Quest Kansas City Inclusive?

In alignment with our humanist values, Camp Quest believes that we are all made better by celebrating differences, cooperatively learning from one another, practicing empathy, and questioning cultural constructions which define and venerate “normality” as a means to deny some people social value and community belonging.

For these reasons, Camp Quest is committed to providing youth with a safe, non-judgmental, bully-free environment that embraces human diversity and makes every reasonable effort to be inclusive.

I don’t feel my child will be comfortable at camp if I’m not there. Would I be allowed to volunteer for camp?

It depends.

Most - but not all - children by the age of eight are capable of spending a week at camp. If you must be at camp for your child to be capable of going to camp, then they are not ready for camp*. This is an evaluation only you can do.

It is also important to ask yourself this question:

Is my child not ready to be away or am I not ready to let them go away?

If your only reason for volunteering for camp is to keep an eye on your child, then you likely wouldn’t be what we look for in a Leader. While we don’t expect parents to ignore their child, parent Leaders must be willing and able to care for all campers in their cabin and activity groups and allow their camper space.

*This may be different for campers with developmental/physical differences and would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

My camper has physical/neurological/developmental conditions or impairments. Can they attend camp?

Camp Quest affirms the right of all people to be treated with respect and encourages campers and Leaders to understand and accept others regardless of their religious affiliation, race, class, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, ability or any other characteristic that makes them unique, wonderful human beings!

For campers with physical health conditions or impairments:

Our ability to adequately support a camper with physical impairments will vary. The terrain in many areas of camp is uneven, rocky, and there are areas where there are no ramps to accommodate mobility devices such as wheelchairs. However, we welcome conversations to find ways to accommodate campers with physical impairments to the best of our ability.

For campers with neurological or developmental conditions or impairments:

We have successfully supported many neurodivergent campers, with conditions such as ADHD and those who have a high degree of function on the Autism spectrum, and in most cases, those campers have had successful weeks at camp. Often their success has been due to upfront communications about the camper and plans put into place before camp to aid in providing what they need to have a successful, fun week of camp.

If you have a camper with neurological or developmental conditions or impairments and you are wondering if our camp is right for them, contact us so we can start a conversation about camp and how, if possible, we can serve your camper.

My child has food allergies.
Can you accommodate them?

CQKC has had many campers (and leaders!) attend camp with food allergies. Please contact the camp director (campdirector@campquestkc.com) with any questions on specific allergies. Generally, CQKC and Wildwood staff are able to provide safe meals and snacks for those with allergies. We also have a nurse on staff for any emergencies.

It is vitally important that you inform CQKC of all allergies before camp so that we can safely accomodate your child with healthy, safe meals; as well as ensure your camper is able to participate in all activities.

What are your COVID vaccination requirements?

Currently, CQKC requires All campers and Leaders to have been vaccinated for COVID to attend camp.

Testing requirements at the time of camp have not yet been determined.

Are campers at Camp Quest required to be atheists?

No.

Campers at Camp Quest are encouraged to think for themselves and are not required to hold any particular view. We firmly believe that children should not be labeled with worldview labels by adults, and instead should be encouraged to ask questions and explore different worldviews as they grow. We do present atheism and humanism as valid and reasonable options for an ethical and fulfilling life.

Would a child who believes in god be comfortable at Camp Quest?

Yes.

Campers at Camp Quest explore different worldviews, and many children have not yet formed their beliefs on the existence of God. Campers who believe in God may get a lot of interested questions from their fellow campers, but the camp environment fosters asking these questions in a spirit of dialogue and mutual respect. Campers who have expressed belief in God have had fun, made friends, and had a great Camp Quest experience.

What are the sleeping arrangements at camp?

Due to popular demand and overwhelmingly positive feedback, all cabins at CQKC are gender inclusive. Campers of all genders are assigned to cabins based on age.

All cabins have private changing areas in the bathrooms. No nudity or changing of clothes is allowed in the main area of the cabin.

Two Cabin Leaders are required to be in the cabin to supervise while campers are changing or showering.

All bathrooms at camp are strictly single use.

If you have questions about cabins, please email campdirector@campquestkc.com.

What do I need to pack for camp?

A Camper packing list can be found here.

Can I order extra T-shirts?

Sure!

One T-shirt is included with the registration fee, but there is a spot on the registration form to order additional T-shirts for $15 each.

Where can I get more info about camp for this year?

Our Parent Handbook for 2024 will be available about a month before camp. A digital copy will be emailed to all parents of registered campers.
